There is allergy medication that can be bought over the counter, there is prescription medication, and let’s not forget that there is natural supplements that can boost the immune system and help to bring the body back into balance.

Antihistamines are one of the most popular allergy medication choices. Antihistamines counter the effects of histamine which is what is released when you are having an allergic reaction. They are sometime combined with decongestants. Popular over the counter choices includes Benadryl, Actifed, Tavist-D, Triaminic, and Drixoral. Prescription medicines include Allegra, Zyrtec, and Clarinex.

Decongestants are the right choice if you have stuffy nose. You might consider the oral or nasal spray for optimum relief. Decongestant allergy medication is even found in eye drops. Decongestants constrict the blood vessels which then reduces swelling. You need to make sure you don’t use them too long and then get hit with what is called the rebound effect.

Corticosteroids are an ant-inflammatory allergy medication that is used to treat swelling and itching that are a result of an allergy disorder. Nasal sprays are the most common use including Flonase, Nasonex, and Nasalide.

Cromolyn Sodium and Nedocromil Sodium are also an anti inflammatory allergy medication and it is usually in a nasal spray which can be used to treat allergic rhinitis. It prevents the release of histamine. It is available in both over the counter and prescription strength.

Epinephrine is the big guns that are used for emergency treatments in cases where anaphylaxis is occurring. It is usually administered with what is called an Epi Pen. This pen lets you self inject your epinephrine

Natural allergy medication uses nutritional supplements to strengthen the body. The use of higher amounts of various nutrients help support the body function.

To boost the immune system take CoQ10, Vitamin B12, grape seed, and AHCC. To improve adrenal function take B5, and to reduce inflammation you need Vitamin A.

Allergy medication can be taken once a day, ever four hour or as ordered b your doctor. Much depends on the medicine strength, the seriousness of the allergy what he or she is trying to accomplish.

You might find yourself in serious condition without even thinking about it. You won’t be alone if you don’t realize the seriousness of a peanut alley or any other medication that is like the epi pen used for allergy medication treatment in serious cases.

There are so many different medications to choose from. What’s really important is that no matter what allergy you have the allergy medication is going to be expensive. They all are. So be prepared to dig deep into your wallet.

You should always consider natural supplements before trying any other medications. You might also consider mixing natural with either a prescription or an over the counter drug that will treat the symptoms while your natural works to restore your body’s health and wellness.

Your allergy medication will make you feel better but do work to treat the real cause of your allergy.

1.	When do people usually wear an allergy mask?

People with allergies wear masks for all different types of indoor and outdoor activities. A very sensitive person may even have to wear a mask at all times. Some of the activities that an allergy mask can help you with are gardening, mowing the yard, vacuuming, raking leaves, going to the store, sweeping, taking walks in park, riding a motorcycle, commuting to work, working in an environment with pollution or fumes, other cleaning jobs, and anytime someone might be exposed to strong smells, mold, mold spores or other allergens.

2.	How do masks help with allergies?

Masks work in the same way that air purifiers work. They filter out airborne particles and allergens. Depending on the type of mask, the filter can protect against irritants like cleaning agents, perfumes, soaps, paint, varnish, hydrocarbon pollution, arsenic, odors, and chemical air fresheners. An allergy mask will be able to provide protection against common allergens like pollen, plant spores, pet dander, mold, cigarette smoke, house dust, and dust mites.

3.	When should anyone consider wearing a mask?

-When you have to clean up mold, garbage, or anything that may seem toxic, even cleaning with bleach.

-When commuting on trains, airplanes, subways, bicycles, and walking surface streets may need to protect the lungs against urban air pollution and fumes.

-If you are sick but you cannot stay home, a face mask may help prevent you from spreading an infection or illness to others.

-During the winter a cold weather mask can help prevent the cold air from causing shortness of breath or a cold weather induced asthma attack.

4.	What different types of allergy masks are available?

There are so many types of masks in the market place that a decision about which mask to purchase can be overwhelming. As when purchasing any allergy product, it’s helpful to learn how a mask works and what’s involved in the differences between them.

When researching any mask it is important to note what type of filtration that the mask provides. There are masks with HEPA filtration, charcoal cloth filtration, carbon filters, and some with no filters. A good mask should come with information regarding the size and types of irritants that are removed.

5.	How do I know what size mask is right for me?

We are asked this question almost every day. Because each mask is made differently, there really is no easy answer to this question. Some masks have adjustable straps, while some attach behind the head with Velcro. Others still have elastic straps that will stretch to fit most people. Getting the correct mask for your face size and your allergy needs is important not only because a snug fit is essential for the best filtration but also because masks are personal items which cannot be returned. Deciding which model and size is best for you will depend on several factors. You need to ask yourself several questions before purchasing:

* Is my face structure small, medium, or large?

* How often am I going to use this mask?

* What level of air filtration do I need?

* How much do I want to spend on an allergy mask?

* Am I allergic to the materials used to make the mask?

Answering these will help narrow your choices some and give you a better idea of what type and size of respirator or mask you should consider.

6.	When do I replace my respirator, mask or filters?

The filters in an allergy mask over time will become less effective. Some masks are disposable, meant for only a few uses at most. These you can simply toss out and replace. In general, you should replace your filters or mask when you notice a decrease in filtration performance or smell solvents. This is referred to as “breakthrough.” This means your filters have essentially captured as much particulate and toxic matter as they can and are now failing and allowing solvents to pass through.

You should also replace your mask when breathing through the mask becomes more difficult, when the mask or filter is damaged, or when the face piece becomes unhygienic. Filter and mask life will depend greatly upon several factors including, concentration of contaminants, humidity, temperature, ventilation and even breathing rates. All of these can work to decrease effective use time. Lastly, for respirator filters or masks with carbon, maximum use time is approximately 6 months since carbon can and will absorb contaminants from the general environment even when you are not wearing the mask or using the filter.

7.	How do I maintain and clean my allergy mask?

Disposable masks are not meant to be cleaned, but with more expensive mask that use replaceable filters, cleaning the mask is very important. Each mask has cleaning and maintenance instructions on the packaging or in the directions. Follow these instructions very closely. The packaging of these masks also is important for sizing and fitting instructions.

8.	How do I store my mask or respirator?

You should store your mask or respirator in a clean, dry area. A respirator does you little good if you get the inside dirty or contaminated with allergens. Store each mask in separate sealed plastic bags in the closet of my garage. There I don’t have to worry about direct sunlight possibly breaking down the filter media or water, dirt or allergens contaminating my mask or filters. They are clean, dry, and ready to use whenever I need them.

9.	Should I buy several different masks depending on my situation and environment?

Yes, you can match up several masks depending on the level of your sensitivity. You may have one for using when mowing the lawn and one for when visiting the grocery store. A different mask will assure that you have the right protection in the right situation.

10.	What are the most common types of specialty masks?

Asthma, allergies & MCS: Those with sensitivity to every day odors such as detergents, perfumes, chemicals, will need a mask with a changeable carbon filter to eliminate these chemicals from the air.

Urban commuters: The best masks for city commuters have HEPA and carbon filters, to provide protection against fumes and oil-based air particles.

Outdoors or athletic activities: Typically a cloth mask or HEPA only will suffice here. Assure that there is a good fit so that it will stay put even during moderate to rigorous activity, offers excellent filtration and isn’t as bulky as a traditional respirator. There are even specialty cold weather masks for use when the temperature drops.

If you have been wondering how to recognize allergy symptoms that are common with different types of allergies, you are in luck. In this guide, you will learn just this. When individuals refer to allergies, they are often referring to the body’s reaction to some type of substance and/or element that is out of the ordinary among most people. Recent studies have indicated that nearly 20% of all people in the United States suffer from some type of allergy. In this guide, you will learn about the many symptoms that affect individuals that suffer from different types of allergies.

Allergens

Allergies are induced by an adverse reaction to one or more types of allergens. These are impurities that linger in the air in our homes, our jobs, and even outdoors. Allergens are often classified as “nonparasitic antigens” which induces a response in the immune system of an individual. When the immune system is triggered, the body produces proteins that are considered to be “antibody” in order to fight off the intrusion. Ultimately, the battle of the immune system results in a fight against itself. There are many different types of allergens that are around us on a daily basis. Dander from pets, cosmetics, cleaning agents, exhaust fumes, and even dust are examples of allergens.

Common Allergy Types

There are many common allergy types that individuals suffer from. In the following list, you will gain an understanding of these types of allergies:

1. The first and most common type of allergy is one that relates to food. Many individuals are sensitive to certain types of seasonings, while others may have a reaction to shellfish and other food types. One may react to something as simple as garlic, while another may be sensitive to a complete food type such as seafood.

2. There is a type of allergic reaction that is referred to as “anaphylaxis”. There are many variables involved when it comes to this particular condition. One may suffer from this reaction if they are stung by a particular insect. Another person may suffer by consuming certain medications. Then, there are those who suffer as a result of consuming certain foods.

3. Many may suffer from allergies that are directly related to the respiratory system. These are often a direct result from ingesting airborne allergens.

4. If one comes in contact with a substance that affects the skin, such as cosmetics or cleaning agents, they are said to suffer from a contact allergy.

5. The venom that comes as a result of insect stings and bites may result in an allergic reaction.

Common Symptoms of Allergies

While each type of allergy has common symptoms that are specific, there are many common symptoms of allergies that may become present if one reacts to one or more types of allergens. The following represents these common symptoms:

o The mouth and throat area may become swollen. In addition to this, itching and tingling sensations may also be felt in these areas.

o One may find it difficult to swallow as appropriate.

o Talking may become difficult to do.

o It is common to experience the sensation or nausea, and even vomiting.

o Gastrointestinal complications such as diarrhea, ingestion, and abdominal cramping are often experienced when an individual is reacting to an allergen, specifically one that relates to a food or food ingredient.

o Various types of rashes and other complications of the skin may occur.

o It is common to find that one experiences difficulty in breathing, rapid or weak cough, and wheezing. Many may even experience a high level of congestion in the chest and the throat area.

o The nose may start to drain, and one may notice that they sneeze frequently.

o One may begin to sweat, feel inappropriate temperature changes for the environment, and may even feel as if they are going to faint due to these feelings.

o The heart rate may become shallow, or even accelerated.

o High levels of irritation or mood changes may be experienced.

o The chest may feel tight.

It is important that you learn all that you can about the different types of allergies, as well as how to recognize allergy symptoms. No one is immune to this type of medical condition.

It used to be if you wanted to find out what you were allergic to you had to undergo a long series of tests that could take weeks or months. If you were allergic to something unusual or rare it could take years or, more commonly, you never would find out. If your allergies were seasonal, they probably disappeared before the testing clinic found an answer and you would give up on the clinic testing and go back to life as before. Much of that procedure today has been speeded up and is more straightforward but if you are being checked for allergies there will probably still be several types of tests performed.

There are three basic ways that a clinic or hospital can use to test you for allergies. The most commonly used is a skin test. This involves putting a small amount of the allergen on your skin. Allergen, by the way, is the medical term for the substance suspected of causing your allergy. Most often, the allergen is applied to your forearm but it could also be done on your back or upper arm. Then the skin in that area is irritated by pricking it with a needle or scratching the skin. This allows the substance to get under your skin. If you are allergic to it there will usually be an allergic reaction in less than 10 to 15 minutes. Usually the reaction just involves redness, itching and swelling of the skin but testers have to be careful with skin tests because in some cases the reaction may be severe and involve respiratory complications. A variation of the skin test is the intradermal allergy test. This test uses a small needle to inject the allergen just beneath the skin. Skin tests are usually used to identify things in the air that you inhale that might be causing your allergy or allergies to insect or animal bites.

A second type of allergy testing is called elimination testing. This is most often used to identify food and diet allergies. In a very controlled environment, various foods are either added or removed from your diet and your reaction is monitored. Often the food is disguised in some fashion to prevent psychological factors from interfering with the test. Sometimes if you think you are allergic to something you abnormally influence the result. Obviously, this method is very time consuming and can only be used if the reactions are relatively mild.

The third and perhaps the best method of allergy testing is the blood test. As the name implies, this involves taking a small sample of your blood and sending it off for laboratory testing. The lab procedure is complicated but basically, they will expose your blood to various allergens. If you are allergic, your blood will create what are called IgE antibodies to fight off the allergen. Depending on what kind of IgE antibodies are created and how many are created the lab can both identify your allergy and tell you how severe it is. RAST and UniCAP are the two main specific types of modern blood testing for allergies. UniCAP is almost a fully automated procedure that can check for several 100 allergens and will even assign a number from 1 to 6 to identify the severity of the allergic reaction. The major disadvantage of blood testing is it requires specialized equipment. Usually your clinic or hospital will have to mail the blood sample off and will not get results back for several weeks.
